Nordic BIM Academy – three days of knowledge sharing and inspiration
2018 April 10

Nordic BIM Academy 2018 were three hectic, inspiring and compressed days with BIM knowledge sharing and a manifestation of OpenBIM as the most value-creating approach to BIM. NBIMA was arranged in collaboration between Norhcon, BIM Equity and buildingSmart.

Nordic BIM Academy (NBIMA) 2018 in Copenhagen included field trips, project and company presentations, OpenBIM in Action and the Build Copenhagen Live competition. The overall goal of NBIMA is to communicate the advantages of cross-disciplinary collaboration and collaboration across various software platforms within the building industry.

With more than 150 participants NBIMA was a success, and it seems that there is a need, and interest, to focus and discus how the AEC industry can become more effective – hence the second edition of NBIMA was a reality. Nordic BIM Academy – Copenhagen 2018 was a fun, hectic and compressed conference generating BIM and VDC inspiration- and not least an eye opener regarding the benefits OpenBIM and IFC provides for any given project.

It all started Tuesday, March 20th, when Jan Karlshøj from buildingSMART Denmark, launched Build Copenhagen Live – a 48 hour competition, where 7 student teams competed to design an Art Hall by the waterfront in Copenhagen. At the end of the conference Team 4 from KEA (Copenhagen School of Design and Technology) where announced as winners with their project entitled “The Swirl”. A great project, clearly inspired by the harbor’s ships. After that the delegates were treated with field trips to three building sites in the greater Copenhagen area.

Foster + Partners, Züblin and Aidea

On Wednesday morning the conference itself began with Lene Espersen, CEO of The Danish Association of Architectural Firms, that talked about how they focus on documenting the added value architects provide to projects. Afterwards Henrik Lund-Nielsen from 3D-Printhuset explained how to print buildings in 1: 1, while Peter Mortensen from Foster + Partners showed how BIM plays a crucial role in New Mexico City Airport. The airport theme was continued by Michael Ørsted from Copenhagen Airports and Astridur Asgeirdottir from Aarsleff, that described how BIM creates value on the expansion of Copenhagen Airport.. COWI and landscape architects STED, explained how the BIM helps collaboration between engineers and landscape architects at the Steno Diabetes Center, while Asbjørn Shannon from Züblin, was the last speaker of the day, and presented hos contractors Züblin have used VDC to build the BLOX building.

Abelardo Tolentino Jr. CEO AIDEA, an Philippine based architectural company that have been BIM front runners since 2005, impressed everyone with a story about AIDEA’s BIM journey. A journey that has increased their productivity with more than 40% compared to the period before they switched to BIM:

VDC and VR

Torben Klitgaard, CEO BLOXHUB, kick off Thursday with a talk about digitization, intelligent products and smart cities. Then Antonio Ruivo Meireles, CEO of Portugal’s ndBIM, demonstrated how they deliver VDC services to major international projects. Peter Bo Olsen of contractor MT Højgaard explained that they use digital models to ensure flawless construction – and how IFC plays a crucial role. Vesa Putkonen from Soini & Horto in Finland presented the huge, multifunctional construction TRIPLA, while Astridur Asgeirdottir from Aarsleff showed examples of how the power plant BIO4 in Copenhagen uses VDC.

Due to a cancelation from New Hospital North Zealand, BIM Equity’s Thomas Graabæk took to the stage and argued why OpenBIM is so important a tool for ensuring good data. Thomas also showed how Panum and New Hospital North Zealnad and others use Epiito’s VR Studio for user involvement and quality assurance ect. The conference ended with a panel debate, where a number of the invited speakers discussed where BIM and VDC provides value and whether it can be documented.

Nohrcon, BIM Equity and buildingSMART were arrangers of Nordic BIM Academy that might return in 2020.
